1950s Electric Lighting for all

Some sources indicate that the Dockyard itself was supplied with electricity during the 1900s, but there are records of private houses still being lit only by gas mantles and candles as late as the 1950s. These were eventually replaced in outlying parts of the town such as Pennar during the 1950s. Old Estate Agents’ advertisements suggest that in the late 1940s some houses in the more central parts of the town had electric lighting and power points throughout, thus adding to their desirability.
