As recently as the 1960s the shortest route from Pembroke Dock to the north of Pembrokeshire and the county town of Haverfordwest included a ferry crossing of the Haven. Approval was granted to build a box section bridge, the Cleddau Bridge to give it its proper name. Work was in progress when in June 1970 a terrible accident caused the deaths of 4 workmen and the injury of 5 more. Work was stopped immediately and it wasn’t until May 1975 that the bridge was completed and officially opened. The ferry boats which had been part of the local scenery for so long were taken away and scrapped.
