A Roll-on Roll-off ferry terminal was built in the Dockyard and B&I Ferries commenced sailings to Rosslare in Southern Ireland in May 1979. The service operated for a few years but ceased in 1986 when it was found not to be financially viable. However, Irish Ferries took over in 1988 and twice-daily services are still operating to the present day. The service is heavily used for freight as well as by holidaymakers and convoys of huge trucks can be seen thundering past the old, elegant, Dockyard buildings on their way to and from the ferry terminal at arrival and departure times. Part of the old Dockyard wall was demolished to allow access to the terminal by road.
